PARISH HISTORY

Mlingano Parish is located about five kilometers north of the Tanga-Muheza/Korogwe highway. Going to the parish, one takes the rural road at Mkanyageni village and drives north through the villages of MATI Mlingano, Mzambarauni, and Vanga.
The Holy Ghost Fathers started this parish in 1902. During and after World War II the parish stayed without the presence of the clergy. It was in 1950 that this parish was handed to the Rosminian Fathers. Rev. Frs Edmund Spillane, I.C. and James Murphy, I.C. were the first Rosminian Fathers to work in this parish. Later Rev. Frs Michael Reen, I.C. and Jackie Reid, I.C. succeeded the first group. Upon their arrival at the parish, they began to build the new church building. Fr. Michael Reen ended up in a very tragic accident when he was badly injured by a tree he was cutting to erect a school. He remained a handicap for the rest of his life until 1979 when he died.
In 1964, other Rosminian Fathers from Italy Rev. Frs. Oreste Radaeli, I.C. and Luigi Cerana, I.C. came to Mlingano. Together with pastoral services, they built a big house for priests which is standing up to this time. Other missionary priests who worked in this parish are Rev. Frs Benedict Forsyth, I.C., Sean Madden, I.C., Jack O’Kane, I.C., Freddie Callanan, I.C., Andy Grant, I.C., Nazzareno Natale, I.C., Denis Sweeney, I.C., and Donald Sullivan, I.C.

Though this parish was erected in the village of Mlingano, the parish priests have always covered a very big territory in their pastoral work in many sisal plantation camps.  In its east, the priests visited the outstations in Azimio, Ngomeni, Umba as far as Kumburu. In its south, they ministered in Mkanyageni. In its north, they ministered in Kibaranga, Mjesani as far as in camps near Maramba. In its west they were able to minister in Mlingoti, Kicheba to the foot of Usambara Mountains.
In 1977, the Rosminian Fathers handed the parish to the bishop. The bishop sent Rev. Fr. Gerald Chilambo as first diocesan priest to work in this parish as a priest in-charge.
The native priests from Mlingano Parish areLeopold Nyandwi (1987), Thadeus Ponera (1990), Ados Majeta, C.P. and Alex Masangu (2005).
