Lushoto is an attractive town situated in a valley about 1200m and surrounded by small patches of pine forest and tropical vegetation. St. Eugene is along the main road about 3km before Lushoto, on your left as you approach from Soni. It is at the center of western Usambara Mountains and it makes St. Eugene’s hostel an excellent base for hikes to nearby surrounding hills. St. Eugene’s Hostel has spotless, modern and comfortable rooms with bathrooms and perfect showers. All rooms have balconies with views over banana fields and the Usambara hills. It is by far the best accommodation close to town (lonely planet). It is run by an order of sisters and the proceeds go to assist their Montessori primary school for local children. Good meals are available from Tsh. 6,000. The home made cheese, jam and banana wine are sold on the premises and they are of very high quality. The production of banana boxes is one of many other activities you may see during your stay at the hostel. |

| Hiking. Lushoto is an ideal base for walking and relaxing, St. Eugene hostel can provide guides and route descriptions for hikes in the Usambara Mountains, although it is easy enough to set off on your own. There are many routes ranging from few hours to several days. One of the most popular is the Irente view point (one hour walk from Lushoto). There are three places about 15km on the outskirts of Lushoto near Migambo village which have wonderful tracks for hiking and excellent view points. There is also a three to four day hike from Lushoto to Mtae. The tourist office in Lushoto can provide you with all the information. |
