Rock Memorial Education Main Objective:

The organization’s goal is to ensure that no present or perspective child receive less favourable treatment than any other on grounds of any conditions, through these specific objectives:

• Creating an open and supportive environment which is free from unlawful or other discrimination and which encourages and improves support for all children.

• Enhancing awareness among the public and stakeholders on the importance of holistic approach to ECD issues.

• Taking a national lead in influencing the public about the right and developments of infants and young children in rural villages and elsewhere.

• Consolidating the organization’s activities with the aim to enhance sustainability and expand the geographical coverage.

• Pursuing excellence in early childhood care,development, learning and related areas by training competent and creative early childhood personnel within the national and international standards.
General Information:
Rock Memorial’s Education Trust (ROME) is a Christian framed registered non-government organization (NGO) established in 1998 to serve and promote the overall development of opportunities of children below 8 years and parents living in social and economic difficulties and those suffering in many ways i.e the orphans and vulnerable.

Location:
ROME’s head office is currently at Hills View Campus on running Mbeza River Bank, one km. North of Korogwe Township Central Bus Stand, alongside the District Hospital Road. It is highly accessible by road from the rest of the regions. It holds a natural central position between the two International Airports of Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro in Arusha. It is relatively within easy reach to the fabulous Kilimanjaro’s outstanding wildlife e.g the Saadan Parks, Ngorongoro Crater, Lakes of all sorts and its exotic islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.

ROME’S Development Activities:
Hills View English Medium School:
Since its inception ROME has established this friendly traditional home-like English Medium Nursery (TA 04/07/EA 001) and Primary Boarding School (TA/04/07/001) The school were registered by the Ministry of Education & Culture vide No. JA/259/287/158/17 of February 13, 2003. The schools are renowned in offering:

• Educational services in a caring, stimulating and self-teaching environment in which each child is encouraged to reach his full potential, to gain confidence, self-respect, responsibility and enjoy learning.

• Opportunities for parental involvement in he care and learning of their children through understanding the aims of the school, the method used, the organization and underlying education principles used.

The main aim of Hills View schools are to assist the children to learn to:

• Be good to others
• Be good to environment
• Live to learn
• Earn a living through independent work

Teaching teams are organized in vertical age groups as follows:

1 to 21/2 - todlers
21/2 + to 3+ - Playgroups
3+ to 5 - Nursery
5+ to 6+ - Pre-school / Infant
6+ to 7+ - Primary education

Early Childhood Learning/Education Training & Development:
Tanzania College of Early Education:

Tanzania College of Early Education with Registration No. CU.57, is the first and the only Christian framed registered and authorized institution specializing solely in early childhood years’ care, learning and education matters in the Great Lakes country zone. The College aims at recruiting and upgrading responsible and mature young men and women of patience and interest in working in a supervised role competently, safely, friendly and effectively with children from birth to 8 years.

TCEE programs provide the underpinning, knowledge and practical training of personnel of Early Years Care and Education for refugees camps, pre-schools, infant schools, day nurseries, family centers, hospitals, migrant schools. It serves both public, private and voluntary sectors. These processes are offered in collaboration with Queen Maud’s College of Early Childhood Education Norway.

Aims:

The College aims to provide a range of courses to Early Years Care, learning and Education personnel at all levels within a Christian framework, by fulfilling the following.

• training competent and creative early childhood human resource at various levels.

• improving young children’s learning and teaching performance, home environment and parental responsibility for quality early childhood care and development.

• promoting child friendly climate, poverty and HIV/AIDS mastering in rural villages, schools and families through pastoral and psychological guidance services.

• designing, developing and producing easy to read materials for children under eight years grounded on research and teaching expertise.

• establishing child study camps in rural villages for better health and research purposes in order to support the quality of the ECD educational system as a whole.

Parenting Education for healthy child development:

Although parents are seen as a basic resource in the care, health and education of their children over the years, their rights to education about their roles have been and are still being neglected. Furthermore, parents do not have a forum in understanding more about children.
As a response to this unacceptable situation, Tanzania College of Early Education, in collaboration with various churches, has arranged for twelve weeks residential empowering program for young mothers, parents, clinic nurses, social workers and those who are involved in the improvement of women’s economic, moral, social, cultural life and status in society.

Certificate in Child development, Care and Learning Kiswahili/English Medium: (2 years)

This is a specialized tailor made program for pre and serving early education personnel in government, church and community based ECD centers (Infant Centers).

Certificate in Management & Care of Orphans and Vulnerable Children: (1 year)

This course is specifically designed to offer knowledge, management skills and care of the orphans vulneralbe children and those who are suffering in many ways such as street or HIV/Aids affected. Special emphasis is placed on children rights abuses e.g children those working in the mines, plantations etc.

Diploma in Early Childhood / Primary Education: (3 years)

This is a three year full-time program for successful pre service ‘O’ level holders of three credits or moe on the National Examination Council.

Diploma in Early Childhood / Primary Education: (3 years)

This is a part-time program particularly designed for in-service teachers involved and interested in pre-school teaching and who wish to pursue further studies in the field. Applicants have to hold strong recommendations from their employers.


Diploma in Child Development/Primary Education: (2 years)

This is a two years full-time course for successful ‘A’ level holders. The course aims to meet the needs of private and public English Medium Schools who require a skilled and professional workforce.

Certificate in Child Development/Primary Education
(Grade ‘A’ - English Medium - 2 years)
This is open to responsible and mature young women and men of patience and those interested in serving young children in various settings: i.e pre-schools and primary schools. Registration for this two years course program requires three C passes ‘O’ level.

Holiday Professional Camp for In-service Nursery Teachers: (28 days)

This is an in-service course for teachers who are already placed in nursery schools but who lack the professional skills in early childhood development and education. Their course is geared towards equipping them with the necessary and proper skills of running nursery schools and the teaching and learning of the young children. This programme takes place during school holidays only.

Eligibility:
Any mature, responsible, patient and interested candidate in working with young children is eligible for direct entry into any one of the mentioned specialized courses. Whereas, those with principal passes at ‘A’ level or equivalent qualification and satisfactory academic references can seek entry for Diploma in Childhood Development / Pre and Primary Education programs.

Those with three credits at ‘O’ level can only proceed to Diploma after successfully re-undertaking ‘A’ level secondary education prior joining the course program or equivalent qualification / strong recommendation from sending institutions.

Award:

Comprehensive range of Certificates, Diploma in Pre-School / Pre-Primary Education are awarded by responsible examining organs (national and external) upon successful completion of respective programme of study.

International Relations:
African Languages and Culture (ALC):

Studying abroad is an incredibly fun and rewarding experience.The opportunity to learn about another culture while living in the heart of it is amazing. Hence, the Language and Cultural Program provides opportunities for students to extend and enrich their learning of Swahili as well as African culture. This five-week program offers over 40 contact hours of language training at Tanzania College of Early Education. In addition, students will be introduced to the rich heritage of East African culture, music and art, as well as to participate on field trips to places of historic and cultural importance.

Note that the (ALC) programs are open for visitors and visiting students interested in Swahili language and African culture

Program Costs:

The cost of the summer program is $980, which includes in-country instruction only, accommodation, some meals and field trips. Students are responsible for pre-departure expenses (passport, health appointment and immunizations), accommodation, field trips, some meals (est. $40 - $50 per week), local transportation and personal expenses.

The application fee will not be refunded even if the student is not accepted or submits a written request to withdraw the application prior to the application deadline.

Institutional Partnership:
Since 2000, Tanzania College of Early Education has been in partnership venture with Queen Maud’s College of Early Childhood Education and agder university of Norway. Over the years, the College has benefited greatly in areas of capacity building, network conferences, staff development and exchange programs, student block teaching practice placements and material resource support.


Until now, Tanzania College of Early Education seeks opportunities to enter into more formal partnership with various colleges of long standing commitment to the promotion of pre-school teacher training and early childhood education development in Africa as well as abroad. Such experiences would facilitate and provide additional momentum to our institution. The collaboration sought is proposed to be within the fore-mentioned areas.
